SINGAPORE – The annual research report by the CNCS, the Corporation for National and Community Service, showed that with one out of every four Americans volunteering through an organization, the willingness to support community services in the United States is very strong amongst citizens of all generations. According to the report, 64.5 million Americans volunteered almost 7.9 billion hours of their time in 2012, which amounts to an estimated value of nearly $175 billion, based on the estimated value of one volunteer hour. The trend of serving to improve the quality of life of neighbors and local communities has been increasing over the past 11 years, a movement that is fostered by more and more companies that organize activities in order to get employees involved in local community services.
One company that has been fostering community projects and initiatives for many years is Selacorp, an all-in-one business solutions provider with offices in Las Vegas, London, Hong Kong and Singapore. “We believe that it is our duty to be proactive in our society,” explains Managing Director, David Selakovic. Instead of merely donating money, Selacorp gets actively involved in what Selakovic describes as a “From Office to Streets” initiative. “We go to orphanages, take care of kids, give food to people, clean the streets or provide entertainment. Our goal is simple: To educate not only the people outside but all our employees no matter what their position is, that when they go out, they have a social responsibility and no matter how small or big this may be, they can be a big asset to community development.”
David Selakovic, who is not only a highly impactful business leader, but also an active philanthropist, believes that the company’s projects help employees as well as residents living in the supported communities. He says he has witnessed a sense of camaraderie growing out of the mutual efforts of Selacorp employees, their bosses and executives to improve the lives of others that has had a very positive effect on employees’ work attitudes as well as their general approach to life. Selakovic once revealed that his philosophy for his business as well as for his private life was an adage attributed to Abraham Lincoln: “Ability may get you to the top, but its character that will keep you there”. Spearheading the “From Office To Streets” initiative shows that Selakovic really believes in Lincoln’s wise words.
